This the National flag of the famous 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. An original Iron Brigade regiment that was shot into near oblivion during all the major engagements of the Army of the Potomac through Gettysburg.
GAR monument at the Marengo, Iowa, cemetery. Larry's hometown where he attended many Memorial Day services both as a lad and as a member of the American Legion. There are many Civil War veterans buried there, all Union save one Confederate. He was honored also.
Larry has 13 relatives who fought in the Civil War. (All were privates!) At least three were disabled for life and one, David, made the supreme sacrifice at Knoxville in 1863. He left a wife and five kids.
The readily identifiable Hardee flag proudly carried by select units in the Army of Tennessee. Regiments serving under the great division commander, Patrick Cleburne, were such units.
