The Holy Bible Containing the Old Testament and the New
Portland: Sanborn and Carter, 1848. Unknown. Soft leather wrap-around {See Photo}. Very good. Text is VG+. Photo CDV sharp. / No Jacket. Item #226
Pocket Bible dated pre-war but with a close Civil War relationship. There is a Mother's prayer/thoughts inscribed in the front of the Bible which hints at military service.
With the Bible is a lock of blond hair, not identified to either the mother or the soldier. Since the son was carrying the Bible logic says it is his mother's hair.
The CDV is likely that of the son. The mother carried the name of Bigelow, therefore it is likely the last name of the soldier. There is nothing other than his hat insignia to indicate what unit he served in. The home town indicated in the mother's note is as far north and east in
Ohio as possible. The soldier could have served in an Ohio unit or stepped across the border and enlisted in a Pennsylvania unit.
ALTOGETHER, A REALLY NEAT PIECE!!
