Item #371 The Life of Stonewall Jackson. John E. Cooke, By a. Virginian.
The Life of Stonewall Jackson.

The Life of Stonewall Jackson.

NY: Charles Richardson, 1866. Later Printing. Hard Cover. G++. Square and tight. Spine lettering faded but readable. Text VG+. Prior owner stamped SAVANA, KAS on the endpapers, but left everything else alone. (Not obtrusive). Actually one of the better copies of this title that I have seen. / None. Item #371

The real first is a very rare and expensive Confederate imprint. The "Union version" was evidently "stolen" during the War and published in the North during the War. Likely immediately upon Jackson's death. Not a common book even so.

Nevins: II-47: "'Composed in bivouac" by an unconcealed admirer; based on personal observations and some official documents." Howes C-734. SP, Freeman states Cooke was a major on Jackson's staff and met most of the luminaries during the War. However, Freeman was unimpressed by his bio of Jackson. Dornbusch IV-8871.

Has the TWO portraits called for in Howes, frontise of Jackson and one of Ewell in the text.
