Slocum was a good Corps commander who served both in the East and with Sherman in the West. Slocum was commander of one of the two corps sent West by Grant. His advice to Meade at Gettysburg was to stay and fight it out, which they did. Started the War as colonel of the 27th NY Infantry. Won a BG commission at First Bull Run. Quite likely a commander whose contributions are overlooked. He assumed a heavy responsibility at Gettysburg and did extremely well.
