Carter was a member of the 6th Cavalry, United States Army. He also wrote a much larger unit history that is very collectible. This small book is chock full of details exclusively dealing with its activities during the Civil War. Dornbusch II-1625.

Roster of Survivors Sixth Regiment United States Cavalry, It appears the roster contains only those who served in the Civil War.
