Downing served in Company E, 11th Iowa Infantry, part of the famous Crocker Brigade. The 11th served throughout the War from 1861 until its end in 1865. The 11th was engaged at Shiloh (Hornet's Nest) where it suffered 200 casualties. Later it fought at Corinth, Meridian, Vicksburg Campaign, Kennesaw Mountain, and Atlanta where it lost one-half its strength. The regiment accompanied Sherman to the Sea and into South Carolina.
