Daniel Matson was English born, orphaned in the US, and entered service in the 1st Iowa for its 90 day life. He then joined the 14th Iowa Infantry where he was commissioned to serve in his new unit. The 14th Iowa service was followed by a two year stint in the USCT 4th Heavy Artillery.

The 14th was part of famous Crocker's unit that fought at the Hornet's nest at Shiloh. The unit also saw service at Vicksburg and with A.J. Smith during the Red River Campaign of 1864.

There is an inscription on the ffep and two sets of initials, one likely Matson's son and the other a member of the family.
