Ryder served in the 33rd Mass Inf, Co. I. He was a 20 year old farmer when he enlisted in July, 1862. He was listed as wounded at Kennesaw Mountain in June 1864. The 33rd first served with the Army of the Potomac through Chancellorsville and gettysburg. It then transferred West where it served under Sherman for the rest of the War.

Ryder remained in service throughout the War and mustered out in June 1865.
