Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs

Springfield, ? George Emerson, 1851. Unknown. Semi hard boards. Not paper wraps. Overall excellent having been carried in the field. Pretty gold tooled covers and spine. / No Jacket. Item #53

This a small, pocket sized, hymn book that has excellent attribution. On the ffep is written in period hand, “Mifs (note old time spelling) Lucy Duer, Canfield, Mahoning Co, Ohio. CAPTURED AT JONESBORO GEORGIA SEP 2ND 1864 BY A SOLDIER OF THE ARMY OF THE CUMBERLAND.” On the back of the ffep is written “Atlanta, Georgia Sep 30th 1864.” NOTE: Hood attacked General Howard’s Army of the Tennessee at Jonesboro on August 31, 1864. Hood suffers a loss and heavy casualties. This and the loss of the final railroad spelled doom for the Atlanta Confederates so they started to abandon the city on September 1st. There was a battle at Jonesboro on the 1st with Hardee leading the Confederates, but it was a futile effort. A special book with Georgia provenance. Very decorative all leather binding.
