Very scarce Navy manual. Book may have its origin with a manual by Totten in 1841. Full of navy jargon. Gives the basics of seamanship along with a glossary of terms (much needed). Lengthy book of 449 pages.

The signature is of John J. Read, U.S. Navy. Attended the Naval Academy and graduated in 1861. Assigned to Farragut's ship, the Hartford for two years. Served in all the blockading squadrons during the War. Remained in service and retired as a Rear Admiral.
