This work by George is one of the rarest accounts of these Western Theater Confederate units. The early War years saw the regiments serving individually in all areas of the West like Fort Donelson, Port Hudson, Vicksburg, Shiloh, and Corinth. The several regiments were finally consolidated as a brigade approximately the last year and a half of the War where it served under Nathan Bedford Forrest. A seldom known term today for the unit durin the War was Forrest’s Kentucky Brigade. This unit should not be confused with Kentucky's Orphan Brigade. With Forrest they saw action at Brice’s Crossroads and in the Nashville Campaign of late 1864.
