Destruction and Reconstruction

N.Y. Longman, Green, 1879. First. Hard Bound. VG/VG+ / None. Item #615

Southall Freeman states Taylor possessed "literary skills of the first rank." ITC-17 Nevins I-166. "One of, if not the best autobiography by a Confederate officer." Howes T-73.

One of must haves written by a remarkable man. Not West Point trained as were most Confederate generals, but possessed a degree from Yale. He was the son of a president, Zachery Taylor and former brother-in-law to Jefferson Davis. Appears Stonewall thought highly of his fighting skills early in the War. An aggressive combatant whose action during the Red River Campaign were so noteworthy. General Taylor died soon after the War.

This book likely once belonged to Pvt W. Moy of the 60th Va Infantry, A.P. Hill’s Corps. His service not too good with lengthy AWOLs. A later owner was George Fort Milton of Chattanooga, a newspaper owner and activist. He served as a lieutenant during the Spanish American War. An interesting man whose bookplate is on the front glue down.
